Henry, Sr. was almost surely a grandson of Roger Shackleford, who came to
Virginia from England in 1659 and settled in 1678 in then Gloucester County, Virginia near the Mattoponi River about where the town of Mangohick is now and much further north than the present-day
Shacklefords, Virginia. Two generations later Henry, Sr. still lived in this general area, which was by this time King William County. He lived there until 1797, when he and Mary sold the property he had inher-
ited from his father and moved to Henry County, Virginia; where Henry, Jr. had already been living for several years, having moved there when it was still Pittsylvania County. Henry
and Mary moved to Henry County only to have Henry, Jr. move away to Kentucky four years or less later.

Henry Shackleford served in the Revolutionary war as a substitute for his brother John. When Henry, jr. turned 16, in 1780, his name was set down on the muster roll at Mangohick Church, and soon there after he served his first tour of two months in the Revolutionary War He served several tours of two months each in 1780 and 1781, and one tour of about three weeks as
substitute for his brother, John. He stated in his pension application that on his last tour of duty. he served under Generals Lafayette and Wayne, and at Yorktown at the time
Gen. Cornwallis surrendered He supposed he was under General Washington, though he never saw him; as Gen. Washington was on the other side of the York River.

After the war, on January 26, 1765, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. he was married by Rev. David Barr to Mary Shields, daughter of John Shields. Nothing is known of this marriage, except there were at least two children (as yet unidentified), and Mary probably died in Henry County
Virginia before Henry moved to Kentucky,
In the Harlan county court, in 1831, Henry was ordered to take charge of and maintain Berry Shackelford, a pauper, until further order of the court. This may have been one of the chil-
dren he had with Mary, but it is as yet not a known fact.
The first account of Henry Shackleford, Jr. in Kentucky was his marriage to Nancy Crump in Knox (later Harlan) County, Kentucky on April 1, 1801 performed by Ceorge Brittain, JP, at the home of Berry
Keywood (Cawood). Nancy was born ca. 1784 in either Kentucky or North Carolina, and her parents are unknown.
Henry and Nancy settled on Catron!s Creek (aka Catherine's Creek) on Martin's Fork of Cumberland River, in Knox (later Harlan) County and raised their family there. In the 1810
Knox County, Kentucky census there was one small child in their household, probably Elizabeth, and two young adults; who may have been the children from Henry's first marriage to Mary Shields.
Earlier land transactions by Henry Shackleford are yet unknown, but in Harlan County Deed Book A, two are noted. The first, abstracted, states: 'William Spurlock to Henry Shackleford, August 16, 1826, for $100, 75 acres on Martin's Fork," witnessed by George Brittain. The second abstract
states: "Henry Shackleford to James Ball, December 19, 1826 for $150, 50 acres on Slater's Fork of Catron's Creek 'it being the land now occupied by said Shackleford," and witnessed by
George Brittain. The deed bears the notation "delivered to James Ball June 28, 1834.
Methodism was the prominent religion in southwestern Virginia and southeastern Kentucky in the early 1800s, and among the circuit-riding preachers of that day was one named Lorenzo Dow, who was· considered rather eccentric. Rev. Dow was not officially endorsed by the Methodist Church, but
adhered to Methodist doctrine. Henry named a son Lorenzo Dow, showing that in some way he must have been greatly influenced by this "exhorter of the gospel," possibly having been converted under Rev. Dow's ministry. When Nancy applied for a widow's pension after Henry died, Thomas
Forrester of Laurel County, Kentucky stated in his declaration of proof to Nancy's marriage to Henry Shackleford, Jr. that "for about 25 years prior to Henry's death, he was a very pious man who prayed and exhorted in public (sie) and was considered a truthful and pious man to his death.

Born ca. 1822, married James Miracle, thought to be brother to Elizabeth's husband William: (5) Nancy, born ca. 1823, married James Hoskins; and(6) Robert, born ca· 1826, married November 20, 1843, Harlan County, Kentucky, Rachel Lee.
In 1829, it was ordered by the Harlan County Court that Henry, Jr. be exempt from paying county levy in the future. probably because of his age, which was 65. Then, in 1832. he filed a claim in open court in Harlan County for a veteran Pension, in which he gave very interesting and extensive
details of his war service. The pension was allowed. and he continued to receive it until his death in Harlan County, May 17,1842.

Altho, her marriage Cerf. says she was born in Virginia there is evidence that she was born at MARTINS FORK IN HARLAN COUNTY KY. according to her sister Myrtle and the fact the 1910 census places the family there in that year.
Her first husband and father of her three son's Roy Estes dropped out of sight and was last seen by his family at the funeral of his mother Annie in 1943 leaving a wife and three boy's to fend for themselves.
Delores married Lindsey Smith in 1944 they were married 20 years when she passed away in 1964 afterwards he moved around a lot finally settling in his old hometown of Jasper Ala. He passed away in 1984...
